Tupac is now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As we struggle to drag ourselves across the finish line of 2016, good news, particularly good news in the form of institutional recognition, feels hard to come by. Well, today we have some brief reprieve because Tupac Shakur isgoing to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, alongside fellow inductees Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam, andYes.
The rapper is the sixth hip hop act (alongside Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, and N.W.A) and the first solo hip hop artist to be inducted, 25 years after his debut album2Pacalypse Now was released. There’s no word on whether or not Coachella’s Holographic Tupac will be accepting the award on the late rapper’s behalf.
While a hearty congrats is certainly in order for all the inductees, I just want to mention that nominees Janet Jackson (nominated twice) and Chaka Khan (nominated three times) were not chosen despite their contributions (Pearl Jam before Chaka?! Here’s a Pearl Jam song: “HEEEEEEDURRR HLEBADEBADEBBARDURRDADURRURR”).
To be fair, this was the third time prog rock heroes and 2017 inductees Yes were nominated as well. So assuming there’s still an America this time next year, I guess there’s always next year.
